Whose hands actually do the lifting?
Ours, every time, and let me put the real worry flat on the table up front: Open Box Moving Solutions is a real moving company, no asterisk attached. The name on each truck belongs to us, the entire crew is paid by us on a W-2, and a single business holds the NCUC, the federal DOT, and the MC registration. It never touches a lead-matching site, it never gets auctioned to the top bidder, and there is no broker parked in the middle. Are your credentials in order and active?
Yes on both counts, and the licensing covers the state level and the federal level alike. Anything staying inside North Carolina answers to the state utilities commission, where we carry NCUC C-2841. Once a state line is crossed, the job runs on USDOT and MC authority, both active. Our coverage holds without a gap across every phase of the work, and we keep paperwork on file for each credential named here.
A flat written figure or an hourly rate?
On a phone call an hourly number can pass for the better deal — and then move-day lands, the meter starts, and the stairs and the heavy pieces and the hours on the road drive the total far past whatever you heard. We run it the opposite direction: one written figure that takes in the whole job, set before anybody pulls the first box off a shelf. If we misjudge the time, eating that cost is ours to do, not yours — your total stays locked to the page. For scale, a two-mover crew comes to somewhere near $130 an hour, but your move is priced as one flat figure rather than a running clock.
Can you store my belongings if a closing slides?
Of course — and up here it lands on us constantly, since mountain closings and sale dates almost never click into place together. Your things go into a clean, dry, climate-held unit and wait there as long as you need, whether that is a few days to span a gap or most of a long mountain closing, and the moment the new place is set we run the whole load over.
How is valuation handled?
There are two levels, and the choice is yours to make. On interstate work the free default is released-value coverage, paying out 60 cents per pound on any item — workable for sturdy furniture, but thin for anything you would be heartbroken to lose. Move up to full-value coverage and the usual cost falls somewhere in the one-to-three-percent range against the value you declare on the load; that spend earns its keep the instant something fragile or pricey is along for the ride. Can a piano come down a turning stair?
That sits squarely in our lane. Montford, Grove Park, and the older blocks of Asheville are packed with historic bungalows built around tight turning staircases, and working furniture down them has been routine for us for years. Eli Sumner takes the heavy specialty work himself; uprights, baby grands, and hefty safes come down a flight on padded boards and rollers under his hands, and not one mark is left behind.
Do you cover steep driveways, mountain weather, and COIs?
We do, and that is exactly the piece the cut-rate outfits leave on your shoulders. A lot of the ridge homes up here perch atop a steep gravel grade a 26-footer can't make, so we run a smaller truck up and back and stage the load. The schedule gets shaped around the heat of a July afternoon and the ice storms that slick the grades in winter, which keeps both the furniture and the crew out of trouble. And downtown and in the River Arts District, management won't sign off on a move-in until a certificate of insurance is filed — our office takes care of filing it and reserving the dock or elevator window ahead of time.
At what point do I pay?
The bill comes due once the last box is set down where it belongs — and cash, a check, or a major card are all welcome. Since the figure was committed to writing before the truck ever rolled, there is no arithmetic to run while we are parked out front and no surprise total waiting to ambush anyone.
And if I need to cancel?
Dates get rearranged and closings fall through — nobody in this business is surprised by it, us included. Give us whatever heads-up you can and the date moves over, no penalty and no hassle attached. The one favor we ask back is enough lead time to offer that opening to whoever is next on the calendar.
Are the trucks yours, and are the movers employees?
They are — every truck in the yard is titled to this company, and everyone in our shirt is on W-2 payroll, hired and trained and backed by us. Nobody gets grabbed off a corner that morning, and your job is never shuffled sideways to a different outfit. The person who quotes your move rides on the very crew that pulls up to do it.
